Growth Mindset
What is a Growth Mindset?
A growth mindset is a way of developing resilience and fostering an outlook where mistakes are seen as opportunities to learn. A strong and secure growth mindset ethos is developed at Ysgol Dewi Sant throughout the years of learning.
At Ysgol Dewi Sant, we have identified 8 learning muscles that children can practise in order to ‘grow’ their brains.

- Introducing Emojis (the 8 Learning Muscles)
The children were asked to come up with their own ‘emoji’ characters that matched the learning muscles. These are the 8 emojis that were created;

- Marking Policy
We have adapted our marking policy so that much more effective feedback takes place between teachers and pupils. This means that children recognise their mistakes and are aware of the next steps that need to be taken in order to improve. We use “pink for perfect” to highlight what they have done well and “blue for improvement” to draw attention to mistakes or something that needs to be adjusted or changed. The children also mark their own work and each other’s work using this marking policy, which encourages a great deal of discussion between pupils about their own learning.
- Talking Partners
Each class is different when it comes to choosing talking partners.
For example, in Year 1, the teachers choose the partners at random on Monday morning, and then the children work in groups of 6 or 8 with their talking partners. This means there are opportunities for children to work collaboratively with different individuals each week. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses, and working with a partner means that everyone is able to learn from one another.
- Celebrating Mistakes
Every class has a “Celebrating Mistakes” wall where teachers and pupils discuss mistakes that arise when work is marked. It is a great opportunity for pupils to see that mistakes are something we should celebrate in order to move forward and improve. At Ysgol Dewi Sant, we celebrate mistakes. Mistakes are a part of learning and development.

- Choosing a Challenge
As part of developing and improving pupils’ mindsets, it is important that they are able to identify which work is sufficiently challenging for them. It is important that children do not spend too much time in their comfort zone, as this does not stretch them mentally. Different levels of challenge are represented by different colours in our school: red represents the most challenging activity, followed by blue and then green.
